McAllen- After a year of Investigation FBI arrested a man—said to be a member of Anonymous hackers, he is accused of trying to hack the Hidalgo country website.
Fidel Salinas Jr. was charged with accessing a protected computer without authorisation and recklessly causing damage and faces a prison sentence of one to five years.
Hidalgo Country website was hacked on Jan-5-2012, there were 14,000 illegal attempts were found to log on its server, attack compromised sensitive human resources and emergency alert data, caused slowness and latency for users, and keeping network administrators from accessing it for about half a day. After that FBI’s Cyber crimes agents were called to investigate the hack.
Access to the website was the result of a brute force SQL injection attack that official said caused more than $10,000 in damages.
That 14,000 attempts were traced by the FBI agents—they got the IP Address which was used in the attack and they tracked it to a house off Nolana Loop in Donna, according to the affidavit. The property owner said that her daughter’s boyfriend had moved into the house, and FBI agents seized various computers and other electronic equipment.
Salinas told FBI:
He used SQL injection techniques to access the website and had chatted with members of Anonymous.
He intended to alert the site’s network administrators.
He also claimed to have posted a Facebook comment aimed at Treviño that ended, in part, with the quote: “We do not forgive, we do not forget” (A Tagline which is commonly used by Anonymous hackers)
But the FBI recovered from Salinas’ computer hacking tools and an internet relay chat containing logs pertaining to the revived AntiSec movement, now affiliated with the Anonymous collective.
